Why a Fiction Author Should Increase their Vocabulary
There is a vocabulary that fiction authors use regularly. There are other vocabulary one can learn so that you always have words that you can choose from when writing. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. It is easy to get into a novel that is engaging when you read it. After reading and enjoying the novel, reread it again. The point of this is to analyse how the work has been written. How the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar are some of the things you should be mindful of. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
The authors differ in the use of words, spelling and punctuation. While Americans use among, the British use the word amongst. There are standard rules that you should stick to when writing for either the American or British readers.
Fiction authors can and should expand the base of the vocabulary that they use. Doing this is possible when they are reading another author’s work. A new vocabulary that you come across should be noted. Most authors do not do this even though it is general knowledge. It is a logical thing to do but is only one of the many strategies of how you can build your vocabulary. Another thing to do is to get a notebook or any other system that you desire, and make categories that suit your needs. When people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV and when you are reading you should be keen to listen. You should take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. The words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use should be kept. When describing the action of the eye, use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. Use this list when making your draft.
